This week marks the death of rock and roll radio in New York City and its suburbs. CBS Radio presented the launch of the new 92.3 NOW FM that consists of an identical top 40 format to that of Z100 (100.3 FM). With the move of radio legend Howard Stern to the brilliant Sirius Satellite Radio in 2006, K-Rock has suffered and suffered by offering mediocre replacement morning hosts such as David Lee Roth and Opie and Anthony. CBS had no other choice but to abandon classic and modern rock music since Stern’s departure. K-Rock was once the premier place to hear new rock music in the area and offered great concerts such as the annual “Dysfunctional Family Picnic” show at Jones Beach Theater. However, in recent years, the playlists took downward spirals that got uglier by the day weighing down the station into oblivion.

________

2017 update: K-Rock is on HD Radio in your vehicle. It’s all robots selecting the music rotation and no DJs at all, but you do get to drive around to rock for free in New York.

94.3 The Shark is also pretty good and available on FM radio if you are in Suffolk County or Eastern Nassau County. They are a little too heavy on the Chili Peppers in their rotation though. Serious dudes, relax with the Chilis.

  4. It’s late april, but it still stinks. Nik Carter was lucky to land at WRXP, but that station is too weird, as far as their playlist is concerned.

I’m also mad, because i’ll miss Cat and Soder, too very cool weekend jocks that i talked to all the time.

Radio is a tough business. I’ve lost many radio stations and formats in my day. It’s never good.

  5. Yeah pure shame that it is gone, I would like it back. Nothing will be like K Rock ever again, I just listen to Q104.3 for a sub, the music is ok and 101.9 aint perfect but its something. The radio is a true bummer now to listen thank god I got my iPod. But still I want my K Rock back the music they played was GREAT!!! 7. I was so upset when I found out k rock was being shut down. That was the only rock station available in my area. Luckily I can listen to it on itunes (which is what I am doing right now, their playing the Chili Peppers) and when I moved I found a rock station here in Dutchess County….Yayyyy me. Still miss k rock on the radio.

  8. We are Acequia, a spanish veteran Rock band from Murcia (Spain). We have been playing around Spain for the last 30 years and now we are seeking the way to let USA audiences listen to our music.
The basic line up is 2 guitars, bass, drums & singer, with another guitar as reinforcement at major gigs.
Our influences come from The Cream,Deep Purple, Eric Calpton, Jimmy Hendrix, The Allman Brothers Band or Lynyrd Skynyrd, but also from Ramones or Iggy Pop.
We are so pleased to find american radio stations who like our works, and hope we will find an USA record label to release our music over there.
Thank you very much for your interest on us.
As I don´t know if you received the link to our live concert video, hereby we send it again.
