Review – Dee Snider “Dee Does Broadway” [Album-2012]

When it comes to interesting hard rock gimmicks of the 21st century, Dee Snider has been ahead of the curve. In 2006 his legendary band Twisted Sister released a very successful Christmas album, A Twisted Christmas, followed by well-attended annual holiday tours. On May 8 Dee Snider delivered his latest twist, Dee Does Broadway via Razor & Tie, featuring 12 revamped classic show tunes. Snider applies that same Twisted energy from the Christmas album to his passion for hit musicals.

In 2010, Dee played the role of Dennis in “Rock of Ages,” igniting his inner Broadway fire. The release of a Broadway album soon became inevitable. An interesting side note is that Snider originally wanted to create this album with shock rocker Alice Cooper; however Alice was not interested in going all in on the concept.

In fact, Cooper does not appear on Dee Does Broadway at all. Instead legendary stars of the stage such as Patti Lupone (“Tonight/Somewhere”), Cyndi Lauper (“Big Spender”), Clay Aiken (“Luck Be A Lady”), and Bebe Neuwirth (“Whatever Lola Wants”) make special guest appearances; Dee also sings alongside his son Jesse Blaze Snider (“The Joint is Jumpin’”).

The standout performances on the album are Snider’s interpretations of “Mack The Knife” and “Cabaret.” But if I had to pick only one track to keep in my collection forever, Dee’s stellar duet with Lupone on “Tonight/Somewhere” would win out.

Another track of note is “Music of the Night,” featuring the violin talents of Mark Wood, in which Snider pours his heart into. He also reigns in darkness on “The Ballad of Sweeney Todd,” a devilish gem.

Dee Does Broadway is another excellent experiment from the heavy metal god. It only makes me think what could come next: a twisted Chanukah, nursery rhymes, or how about finding the inspiration for what the fans really want – new TWISTED SISTER!

Is Phil Anselmo Warming Up To Pantera Reunion? Zakk Wylde?

Over the last month Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul and frontman Phil Anselmo have made comments regarding a future reunion of the legendary metal band. Paul stated that Zakk Wylde would be the man to fill in for the late Dimebag Darrell on guitar. Phil Anselmo is not as sold on the idea, but seems to be open to the idea of a reunion in the future.

Anselmo said the following in an interview with WGRD 97.9: “If anything like that [Pantera reunion] would ever possibly happen, Vince and I would have to sit in the same room, hash out whatever differences that we have, and as far as Zakk Wylde goes, I am not too sold on that ’cause we have to hash some crap out too. That day has not come yet, and until that day comes, I can comment further on that, but till then it is just talk. It would be rough not to see Dimebag on stage to my left, I would feel naked.”

Sounds like there is a chance to me; at least a much better chance than Guns N’ Roses getting it together. We say get those two in a damn room already and let’s see what comes of it.

Black Sabbath Announces Substitute Drummer

Following original Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward’s statement of why he will not be performing with the band this summer, Black Sabbath have released a statement of their own. According to the band, they have picked up a substitute drummer for the summer gigs. Upcoming Sabbath shows include Birmingham on May 19, Download Festival on June 10, and Lollapalooza on August 3.

The man will be revealed soon by the band, but my guess is Tommy Clufetos, the drummer that singer Ozzy Osbourne stole from Rob Zombie for 2010′s Scream. I don’t think it will be: Mike Bordin since Faith No More are playing shows this summer, Joey Jordison because Slipknot is touring all summer, and Mike Portnoy will be doing the same with Adrenaline Mob.

Again, this is a huge disappointment and disgrace. How could the four original members of the greatest heavy metal band of all time not get it together? There is only one reason/reality show judge that I can think of that is responsible…

Van Halen Members “Hate Each Other” – Postpone Summer Tour

Rolling Stone reports that Van Halen is halting their tour plans after June 26 (New Orleans). That means over 30 shows are postponed until further notice. The rock ‘n roll magazine’s website also reports that the band members “hate each other… the band is arguing like mad. They are fighting,” according to a source.

The band’s recent album A Different Kind of Truth is a great hard rock album, one of the year’s best, and the band has been killing it live (MSG show review). I guess it makes sense for Van Halen to do what they do best… and implode! Still sucks to hear.

Review – John 5 “God Told Me To” [2012]

John 5 is a brilliant rock guitarist who never ceases to amaze. His technical ingenuity, self-discipline, and general inventiveness are on full display in his latest guitar album God Told Me To.

John 5 delivers fervent aggression while shredding away on “Welcome To Violence,” “The Lust Killer,” and “The Hill of Seven Jackals.” On “Killafornia,” the Rob Zombie guitarist serves up explosive Satch-like melodies.

The best cover of Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” of all time is the one on this very album. John 5′s guitars scream the verses in a blistering manner, far better than any rock singer could offer.

It is important to note that this is his first solo album with prominent acoustic guitars. The Zeppelin-esque “Ashland Bump” and “The Castle” are perfect compliments to the more vicious tracks.

“Noche Acosador,” “Creepy Crawler,” and “The Lie You Live” also employ acoustic guitars striking just the right balance between groove and elegance.

John 5 is a gifted audile that consistently conjures up intense images with his music. God Told Me To is his best all-around release to date thanks to its diversification and unbridled passion. For guitar fans, this album is a must own.
